The sea chart, with charted waters, dark fog over unexplored squares and a grid

Maps and sea charts

Every captain starts with a chart of coastlines and port names. Sail to reveal the rest. Unexplored water stays in fog. Press M for the full chart, with a grid and your own pins. A compass minimap stays on the HUD.

Chartmakers in port sell charts of far waters. At a chart table you copy squares you have explored into a chart item signed with your captain's name, for gold and a wait. Trade charts with other players, and read them to fill in your own map. Guilds can hire a cartographer to keep a shared chart, and party members see each other on the chart. Buy instruments at the shipwright, such as a sextant or a spyglass. Reefs and shoals appear on charts.

The compass ring with a red no-go wedge facing into the wind and a hint card beside it

Wind you can read

The compass shows a red no-go cone where the wind blocks your sails, with an amber band on each side where you lose drive. The HUD tells you when you are close to the wind, in irons, or blocked from turning, and which way to steer.

New sailors get short in-game hints when a situation comes up, such as tacking. Cycle through them, close one, or turn them all off. Your choice follows your account.

A whale surfacing near a ship, with a gull flock above and a shark fin circling in the distance

Sea life

Whale backs and spouts, shark fins, leaping dolphins, fish shoals, gulls and drifting flotsam fill the water. Everyone sees the same creatures in the same place. They are scenery, not targets. Gulls scatter when guns fire, and a sinking ship draws sharks for a minute.

A hull with scorched, splintered sections and smoke rising from the damage

Hull section damage

Shots hit where they land. Scorch marks and smoke show broken sections, and a broken mast drops its sail. Bow, middle and stern each have their own health. A broken bow stops the bow gun, a broken middle slows your reload, and a broken stern slows your turn. Repairs fix broken sections first.

How it works

  1. Sign in with Discord. Your captain and ship are saved to your account.
  2. Finish the tutorial: raise sail, dock, buy, sell, fire, and fit your first upgrade.
  3. Pick a trade route or pick a fight. The guide covers the rest.
